The exhibition traces the artist’s journey during the Soviet era – from their first song in an amateur ensemble to recording releases and touring. It tells a story about visibility and the price often paid to achieve the dream of stepping onto the stage: creative restrictions, adjustments to repertoire, permits, inspections, broadcasting rules, and censorship.
“Estrada. The Price of a Dream” invites visitors to view estrada as a cultural system shaped not only by performers, but also by editors, critics, cultural workers, ideologues, institutions, and audiences. Talent alone did not guarantee visibility and recognition depended on festivals, radio and television, reviews, decisions made by party structures, and the role of intermediaries.
Today, estrada is re-emerging in new contexts. A younger generation of artists reinterprets it through electronic, jazz, and pop music, while classic hits return in concerts, television projects, and vinyl releases. The exhibition therefore also reflects on questions that remain relevant today: who creates visibility? Who decides who gets on stage? And how are the mechanisms of stardom changing in the age of algorithms and digital platforms?
The world of estrada comes to life through authentic photographs, documents, stage costumes, posters, records, and instruments. Visitors are invited not only to look, but also to listen: radio and television recordings reveal the sound of estrada and evoke the atmosphere of its time.
